These firewalls are pissing me off. I don't understand what's wrong. For the life of me I can't get a gigabit interface to go over 5 megabits. You would think I'm just a complete moron or something. Something is very wrong with FreeBSD 5.4 and I can't figure out what it is. I've finally come to the point where I'm going to try something else so I've g4u'd the hard disks for both of them and I'll try Debian instead. Sarge is fresh off the press, so I think it's time to give it a try. The problem is that it's more difficult to create iptables rules than it is to do ipfw. But if the damned thing works, what do I care? Actually, I'd prefer Debian anyway.
Update: Got them both installed on Debian and the networking throughput is up over 600 Mb. Not bad I'd say. It is of course obvious that I'll never actually get the full gig pushed through, but going 60% if the way without hardly trying is good enough for me.
